Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane, one of the most highly-praised plays out of Ireland in decades, will receive its southern California premiere at South Coast Rep March 7-April 9, 2000. It will be the fourth production of the 1999-2000 Second Stage Season. The director and four-actor cast are to be announced.

Set against the raw landscape of rural Ireland, Beauty Queen tells a sometimes dark, frequently hilarious story of a mother and her spinster daughter. Trapped in a desolate cottage in equally desolate lives, the two women engage in a battle of wills until an interested neighbor offers the younger woman a final chance at escape.

McDonagh's debut play earned him instant fame in Britain. Its Broadway run won 1998 Tony Awards for its director and three of its actors. Beauty Queen was followed by The Cripple of Inishman and Lonesome West, the latter nominated for a 1999 Tony Award.

In related news, SCR also announced the appointment of Marcia Lazer as Marketing Director. She held the same post with the Metropolitan Opera, L.A. Opera and Center Theatre Group. She also headed the West Coast office of Metro Direct, a New York-based national direct marketing firm specializing in the arts and entertainment.

SCR was also awarded the "Outstanding Achievement Award for excellence in American theatre" by National Theatre Conference, an association of theatre producers, educational leaders and non-profit theatre artists.
