The play, which stars Ben Chaplin in his National Theatre debut, is based on the star BBC correspondent James Mossman and focuses on the years leading up to the journalist's bewildering suicide in 1971.

Wright's work for the National includes Vincent in Brixton - also directed by Eyre for the National and on Broadway - and the adaptations of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials.

Eyre, whose most recent film "Notes on a Scandal" has received four Oscar nominations, was artistic director of the National from 1988-1997.

His most recent stage work includes Hedda Gabler at the Almeida, which won Olivier awards for Best Director and Best Revival. He also directed Mary Poppins in London and on Broadway.

Chaplin appeared in Eyre's movie “Stage Beauty” and played opposite Nicole Kidman in "Birthday Girl." Stage credits include This Is How it Goes and The Glass Menagerie at the Donmar and The Retreat From Moscow on Broadway.
