Broadway News Benj Pasek and Justin Paul Will Compete Against Lin-Manuel Miranda at the 2017 World Soundtrack Awards The Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton songwriters will face off for their work on La La Land and Moana, respectively.

On August 21, the World Soundtrack Academy announced the first set of 2017 World Soundtrack Award nominees.

In the category of Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film, “City of Stars” from La La Land, with lyrics by Tony and Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and music by Justin Hurwitz, will face off against “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Also competing in that category are “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls, with music and lyrics by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin, and Shellback; “Never Give Up” from Lion, with music and lyrics by Sia Furler and Greg Kurstin; and “Runnin‘” from Hidden Figures, with music and lyrics by Pharrell Williams.

The Academy also released the nominations for Best Film Composer of the Year and Best TV Composer of the Year. (See below.)

Pasek and Paul won a Tony Award earlier this year for their score to their Tony-winning Best Musical Dear Evan Hansen. They also won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for their work on “City of Stars,” beating out Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go” in both awards ceremonies. In 2016, Miranda took home two Tony Awards for his book and score to Hamilton. The musical also won the Tony for Best Musical in 2016 and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The World Soundtrack Awards will take place in Gent, Belgium, October 17–19.
