The producers of Gypsy are searching for child actors to portray Baby June and Baby Louise as well as other kiddie parts in the upcoming production of the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents musical that will star two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters. The revival of the classic musical, which will feature direction by Sam Mendes, choreography by Jerry Mitchell and musical direction by Patrick Vaccariello, begins rehearsals Jan. 20, 2003. The first preview performance is scheduled for March 24 with an official opening on April 24 at a yet-to-be confirmed Shubert theatre.

Auditions will be held Sept. 21 and 22 at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts (214 W. 43rd Street) for boys and girls interested in joining the company. There is a 10 AM call on Sept. 21 for Equity and non-Equity child performers (girls) and a 10 AM call on Sept. 22 for Equity and non-Equity child performers (boys). Those auditioning should prepare 16 bars of a traditional musical theatre song; bring a picture and resume as well. The last Broadway mounting of the famed musical Gypsy cast "Cagney & Lacey" star Tyne Daly in the role created by Ethel Merman. The 1989 Daly revival won a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical as well as one for its leading lady. Angela Lansbury also won a Tony for the role of Rose when she played a brief engagement on Broadway.
