La MaMa and Toronto's One Little Goat Theatre Company co-present the New York premiere of Ritter, Dene, Voss, which will run through Oct. 10 at the downtown theatre. The play derives its title from the names of the three actors who originated roles in the comedy in 1986.
One Little Goat artistic director Adam Seelig will direct the cast, which will include Maev Beaty, Shannon Perreault and Jordan Pettle. Sets and costumes are by Jackie Chau and lighting is by Kate McKay.
Ritter, Dene, Voss, according to La MaMa, "explores sexual repression and sibling rivalry with characteristic tenacity and wit. The play involves two sisters – both actresses – and their attempts at reintegrating their volatile brother into their home. The brother, a tormented genius (loosely based on last century’s great, idiosyncratic philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein), has just returned from a mental health institute, complicating the dynamics between the three siblings."
Bernhard's plays also include The President and Eve of Retirement, A Party for Boris, Histrionics and Over All the Mountain Tops. He penned the novels "Gargoyles," "Wittgenstein's Nephew," "The "Loser," "Frost" and "Yes."
