Thoroughly Modern Millie and The Goat — the winners of the 2002 Tonys for Best Musical and Best Play — both saw their box office traffic increase in the hours after the June 2 ceremony.
By late afternoon, June 3, Millie had taken in $230,470 in single tickets sales, and was expected to collect $350,000 by the end of the day.
A spokesman for the Edward Albee play said Monday's sales were double what they had been the previous week. According to Variety, that would mean a box office take of roughly $80,000.
Increased ticket sales were also reported for Urinetown, which won Tonys for Best Book, Best Score and Direction of a Musical; Private Lives, which won for Best Revival of a Play; and Into the Woods, which won for Best Revival of a Musical.
A spokesman for Fortune's Fool said June 3's box office performance was up 50 percent over last Monday, and that ticket sales were even more brisk on Tuesday, June 5. Producer Elizabeth McCann said in a statement, "Broadway ticket agents report that sales spiked across the board for all shows that participated in last night's broadcast."
