Chicago veteran Bianca Marroquín is set to return to the Broadway production as Roxie Hart from May 1–July 2, marking the 17th time the star has performed in the Tony-winning revival at the Ambassador Theatre. As previously reported, Ryoko Yonekura will take over beginning July 3.
Marroquín first portrayed the role in the Mexico City production of Chicago in 2003, for which she received five awards from the Mexican Critics Association, including New Revelation and Best Actress. She made her English-language debut as Roxie Hart on Broadway that same year and later took Roxie on the road, kicking off the show’s third national tour and earning a 2004 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress.
Marroquín has also appeared on Broadway in The Pajama Game with Harry Connick Jr. and as Daniela in the musical In the Heights.
Chicago currently stars Charlotte d’Amboise as Roxie Hart, Lana Gordon as Velma Kelly, Tony Yazbeck as Billy Flynn, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart, NaTasha Yvette Williams as Matron “Mama” Morton, and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.
With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is directed by Tony winner Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Tony winner Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse.
Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, Chicago is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
