Gingold Theatrical Group’s Project Shaw, which is under the leadership of artistic director David Staller, kicks off its 12th season February 13 with a reading of George Bernard Shaw's Candida at Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre (2537 Broadway at 95th Street) in Manhattan.

Directed by Staller, the cast features Tony Award winners Blair Brown as Candida and Michael Cerveris as Rev. James Morell, with Jay Armstrong Johnson as Marchbanks, Jolly Abraham as Prosperine (“Prossy”) Garnett, Dakin Matthews as Mr. Burgess, and Carman Lacivita as Rev. Alexander (“Lexy”) Mill. Maggie Buchwald is the Narrator.

Candida, one of Shaw’s most popular romantic comedies, "sweeps us through one tumultuous day," according to press notes. "An impassioned young poet, Marchbanks, has become a fixture in the home of the foreword thinking Reverend James Morell and his brilliant wife, Candida. By the end of that day, the poet has forced a life-changing decision from Candida that will forever alter the future of all concerned. Along the way, Shaw exhibits his dazzling insights and wicked wit."

According to Staller, “This play, subtitled A Mystery, has been intriguing people since its creation. Only Shaw’s third (of 65) plays, it demonstrated a writer already at the top of his game. This play was written as a response to Ibsen’s ground-breaking A Doll’s House, and it was considered shocking in its time, particularly since the title character makes it clear that she’d be quite ably content to live on her own without any man to guide her.”

Tickets are $35 and are available by calling (212) 864-5400 or online at www.symphonyspace.org. Special reserved VIP seating is available for $50 by contacting the Gingold office at (212) 355-7823 or [email protected].
