The Prospect Theater Company presents the bluegrass-tinged musical based on the J. M. Synge play The Playboy of the Western World. Golden Boy began performances April 17 and will run through May 3 at the Off-Broadway venue.

Prospect Theater's producing artistic director Cara Reichel stages the production, which she co-adapted with Peter Mills, who penned book, music and lyrics for the musical.

Mark Mozingo and Victoria Huston-Elem star as unlikely lovers Clay and Maggie, respectively, in a cast that also features Jeff Edgerton (Parade) as Luther, Carol Hickey (The Flood) as Widder Hazel, Dan Sharkey (Illyria, Lone Star Love) as J.M. and Scott Wakefield (Ring of Fire, It Ain't Nothin' but the Blues) as Leroy.

According to press notes, "On the run and desperate, outlaw Clayton Monroe appears one evening at the door of feisty Maggie McFarland and her father J.M., a moonshiner. J.M. hires Clay to protect his daughter from the revenuers, as well as her overly attentive fiancé, Luther, and the conniving neighbor, Hazel. Left alone together, spitfire Maggie softens, and Clay begins to see himself through her eyes, becoming the 'golden boy' she has always envisioned would find her. This tale of an unlikely hero, a backwoods romance, and a slapdash murder make for a darkly comic and truly American story of self-discovery."
