She Loves Me, Bock & Harnick's musical set in the Budapest of the 30s, is currently playing at the Ronacher Theatre in Vienna, Austria. It is the first time that this show, which opened on Broadway in 1963 and was revived in 1993, has been seen in a German version.

Before the curtain went up Sept. 19, both composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick expressed their delight in front of the opening night audience. Harnick said "This may be the closest we come to Budapest," which is several dozen miles down the Danube from Vienna.

Scott Ellis who directed the show both in New York and London three years ago, was credited with the direction in Vienna too, although he only supervised the previews. He left Vienna before the premiere, reportedly because of his mother's sickness.

Rene Rumpold and Christine Rothacker play the leads in a cast that consists of Austrian, German and Hungarian actors.

The show is announced to run at least till May, 1997. For tickets ($10-$95 Austrian), call +43-1-514 02.
