Stephen Gately is to make his theatrical stage debut in the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat .

Gately, who sprang to fame as a member of the hugely successful pop group Boyzone, will play the lead role (at the Liverpool Empire) from Dec. 16 to Jan. 11, 2003.

Joseph, which tours the U.K. before arriving at Liverpool, may be headed for the West End next year, in which case Gately would be a major draw.

The part of Joseph has often been played by celebrities in the past, including soap star and singer Jason Donovan, and singer Aled Jones, who swapped "walking in the air" in a snowstorm for thong, sandals and sand.
