Based on David I. Kertzer's book "The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortaro, the new play will be directed by Mark Lamos and will be presented at the Guthrie's McGuire Proscenium Stage Nov. 4-Dec. 17. Three-time Tony nominee Brian Murray will head the cast as Pope Pius IX.

Joining Murray onstage will be Jennifer Regan (Marianna Mortara), Ron Menzel (Momolo Mortara/Pio Edgardo), Stephen D’Ambrose (Cardinal Antonelli), Nancy Rodriguez (Nina Morisi/Sgra Scazzocchio), J.C. Cutler (Fr. Feletti/Gramont/Il Dottore), Tyson Forbes (Lucidi/Scazzocchio/Riccardo Mortara) and Sasha Andreev.

The creative team also includes Riccardo Hernández (set designer), Candice Donnelly (costume designer), Mimi Jordan Sherin (lighting designer), Robert Waldman (composer), Reid Rejsa (sound designer), Marcela Lorca (movement), Jo Holcomb (dramaturg), Lucinda Holshue (voice and dialect coach) and Sean Michael Dooley (assistant director).

Edgardo Mine is set in 1850's Italy where, according to press notes, "a Christian cannot be raised by Jews. After being secretly baptized by a housemaid as an infant, the young Edgardo is taken from his Jewish parents and raised as a Catholic. As the ensuing battle for Edgardo’s custody rages, his mother suffers her own crisis of faith as she clashes with the church, her husband and eventually Edgardo himself in a fight for his soul."

Brian Murray received Tony nominations for his performances in The Crucible, The Little Foxes and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. His other Broadway credits include The Rivals, Uncle Vanya, Twelfth Night, Racing Demon, White Liars & Black Comedy, The Show Off, A Small Family Business, The Circle, Blithe Spirit, Arsenic and Old Lace, Hay Fever, Noises Off, Da, The Waltz of the Toreadors, Sleuth and All in Good Time. The Guthrie is located at 818 South 2nd Street (at Chicago Avenue) in downtown Minneapolis. Tickets, priced $22-$52, are available by calling (612) 377-2224 or by visiting www.guthrietheater.org.
