The 1997 Tony Award winner as Best Play, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, has posted its closing notice. Alfred Uhry's drama about a Jewish family in 1939 Atlanta will have its last night on Broadway on Sunday, June 28 after 23 previews and 557 performances. The current cast of Ballyhoo includes Kelly Bishop, Joanne Camp, Christopher Gartin, Peter Michael Goetz, Ilana Levine, Todd Weeks and Amy Wilson. The show opened at the Helen Hayes Theatre on Feb. 27, 1997. In its original cast were Dana Ivey, Arija Bareikis, Terry Beaver, Jessica Hecht, Stephen Largay, Paul Rudd, and Celia Weston. Ron Lagomarsino directed. The drama was originally commissioned for the Olympics Arts Festival in Atlanta, where the play debuted in summer 1996. On Broadway, the drama went on to win, in addition to the Tony, the Drama League Award for Distinguished Play, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Broadway Play.

Ballyhoo is set in Atlanta, where prejudice against (and among) Southern Jews arises during plans for the German-Jewish community's annual Ballyhoo ball. It's also the time of the release of the film classic, Gone With The Wind, which takes place in Atlanta and deals with the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Ballyhoo centers on first cousins Lala Levy and Sunny Freitag, thrilled as they prepare for the social event of the season for the cream of Southern Jewish society.

Tickets (prev $45, reg $50-$55) can be ordered by calling (212) 307-4100.
