Masterworks Broadway, a label of Sony Masterworks, will release the cast recording. An album producer will be named. The recording session is Jan. 17, two days after the show ends its Off-Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop.
Once, an intimate show about a Dublin busker called Guy whose performance and songwriting efforts are encouraged by a Czech musician-muse named Girl, will begin performances on Broadway Feb. 28 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 W. 45th Street). The official opening is March 18.
The show based on the Academy Award-winning film concludes a sold-out run at Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop in the East Village Jan. 15. The entire troupe — including Steve Kazee as Guy and Cristin Milioti as Girl — will move uptown. The show is filled with actor-musicians who play characters, sing together and accompany each other on a range of instruments, forming a rare communal experience.
The musical has a book by Enda Walsh (Penelope) and music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who played the would-be lovers in the film and wrote its songs, including the Academy Award-winning "Falling Slowly. "
The show's score also includes subsequent songs by The Swell Season (Hansard & Irglová's band) — as well as Irish and Czech folk songs. The score is orchestrated and arranged by music supervisor Martin Lowe. Expect Guy on guitar, Girl on piano (as in the film) and a supporting cast on mandolin, melodica, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, accordion, bass, drums and many other instruments.
The songs do not seek to tell this simple story in a brash in-character way; this is a new era of show tune where music punctuates and gives expressive life to the characters' moods and hopes. (After the Guy and Girl and their pals have a 24-hour recording session, there is an a cappella number that defies convention and description, and has helped create buzz for the show.)
The company also includes David Abeles, Claire Candela, Will Connolly, Elizabeth Davis, David Patrick Kelly, Anne L. Nathan, Lucas Papaelias, Andy Taylor, Erikka Walsh, Paul Whitty and J. Michael Zygo.
The set and costume design are by five time Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (The Coast of Utopia, Mary Poppins), lighting design is by Tony winner Natasha Katz (Aida, The Coast of Utopia) and sound design is by Clive Goodwin.
