For those who can't wait until Sept. 26, the first scheduled Broadway preview of British choreographer Matthew Bourne's innovative staging of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, PBS will broadcast the London production 9 PM Wednesday, June 10, as part of its "Great Performances" series. Bourne's theatrical version of the ballet was a hit both in London and Los Angeles. The flamboyant dance/theatre show, with men dancing the swan roles usually assigned to ballerinas, is set to begin previews Sept. 26 and open Oct. 8 for a 16-week engagement at the Neil Simon Theatre. The event is co produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Katharine Dore. Tickets for the Broadway production are now on sale via Ticketmaster at (212) 307-4100.
Bourne, tapping today's celebrity-obsessed culture, resets Swan Lake in a fantasy 1950s London of libidinous royals. The show stars Adam Cooper as the Swan, Scott Ambler as Prince Siegfried, and Fiona Chadwick as the Queen. The television production will be directed and edited by Peter Mumford.
