Rather than recast with American actors, Skylight will end its limited engagement on Broadway, Dec. 29. The drama stars English actors Michael Gambon and Lia Williams.
According to company manager Eric Muratalla, Equity contracts governing the length of time actors from the UK can stay in a Broadway production would have forced Gambon to leave by Dec. 22, although a deal was worked out so that the show could extend through the holiday week -- traditionally an exceptional time for ticket sales.
David Hare's Olivier Award-winning London hit, Skylight, not only opened on Broadway Sept. 19 to almost uniformly strong reviews -- some of the best Hare's plays received from the U.S. daily press -- but has since recouped its investment, after five weeks of being the top-grossing play on Broadway.
