PREMIERES present the works in association with Primary Stages for a 16-performance run through April 24. Opening night is scheduled for April 6.
Inspired by Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, a BBC television series which employed a series of inter-related dramatic monologues, Inner Voices "unites the spoken monologue with a tapestry of lyrics and music."
The 95-minute presentation features the new musicals Mosaic and Whida Peru: Resurrection Tangle. Jonathan Butterell — who provided musical staging for The Light in the Piazza and Assassins on Broadway — directs both musicals.
[title of show] and The Little Mermaid star Heidi Blickenstaff plays the central character Ruth in Mosaic. Featuring music and lyrics by Georgia Stitt with a book and lyrics by Cheri Steinkellner, the musical is billed as "a multi-media, real-time half-hour in the life – and on the MacBook – of Ruth, a woman blogging at the crossroads of birth, death, love and Diet Coke."
Broadway star Judith Blazer (LoveMusik, 45 Seconds From Broadway, Titanic) plays the title role in Whida Peru: Resurrection Tangle. The musical, which features music by Josh Schmidt and book and lyrics by David Simpatico, will take audiences "into the chambers of a rare creature, as she is forced to evaluate the quality of life, death and what lies in between for her." Steve Marzullo (Mosaic) and the team of Andy Boroson and J. Oconer Navarro (Whida Peru) handle musical direction. The design team includes Dane Laffrey (set and costumes), Jennifer Schriever (lights), Toby Algya (sound) and Rocco DiSanti (video). Robert Bennett serves as production stage manager.
