Broadway's Skylight Will Go Dark for a Week in April | Playbill

News Broadway's Skylight Will Go Dark for a Week in April The Broadway revival of Skylight, which is currently in previews, will be dark the week of April 14-19 so the cast can fulfill prior commitments, including co-star Carey Mulligan's pre-arranged break to promote her new film, "Far From the Madding Crowd."

Such breaks have become increasingly common on Broadway. In the last year Kinky Boots and If/Then took similar breaks for various reasons. As previously reported, On the Town will be on hiatus May 7-12.

Mulligan and co-stars Bill Nighy and Matthew Beard all re-create their acclaimed London performances in David Hare's drama at the John Golden Theatre.

Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, An Inspector Calls), the West End import will officially open April 2 for a 13-week limited engagement through June 21.

Here's how it's billed: "On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra Hollis (Mulligan) receives an unexpected visit from her former lover, Tom Sergeant (Nighy), a successful and charismatic restaurateur whose wife has recently died. As the evening progresses, the two attempt to rekindle their once passionate relationship, only to find themselves locked in a dangerous battle of opposing ideologies and mutual desires."

Skylight is designed by Bob Crowley with lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Paul Arditti and original music by Paul Englishby. The production played to sold-out houses when it opened in the West End in June. National Theatre Live broadcast the production Oct. 23, 2014.

Skylight is produced on Broadway by Robert Fox and Scott Rudin.

Mulligan appeared in The Seagull both on Broadway and in London (at the Royal Court Theatre) and Off-Broadway in Through a Glass Darkly at the New York Theatre Workshop. Nighy starred on Broadway in Hare's The Vertical Hour and at London's National Theatre in Hare's Pravda and A Map of the World.

Beard made his stage debut in the West End production of Skylight.

Hare's Skylight premiered at the National Theatre in London in 1995 before playing engagements in the West End and on Broadway the following year. Skylight is Hare's 11th Broadway production. His other works include Slag, The Great Exhibition, Brassneck (with Howard Brenton), Knuckle, Fanshen, Teeth 'n' Smiles, Plenty, A Map of the World, Pravda (with Howard Brenton), The Bay at Nice, The Secret Rapture, Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges, The Absence of War, Amy's View, The Blue Room (from Schnitzler), The Judas Kiss, Via Dolorosa, My Zinc Bed, The Breath of Life, The Permanent Way, Stuff Happens, The Vertical Hour, Gethsemane, Berlin Wall, The Power of Yes and South Downs.
