The star of Network talks to The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah about her Broadway debut alongside Bryan Cranston.

Emmy-winning actor Tatiana Maslany stopped by The Daily With Trevor Noah December 18 to talk about her Broadway bow in the new play Network, as well as her new movie Destroyer opposite Nicole Kidman.

In both cases, Maslany describes digging into intense characters. “I feel like I always take home a character—with joy, though,” said Maslany. “It doesn’t feel like a burden though.”

Maslany plays Diana Christensen in Network, the young network executive bent on capitalizing on the entertainment quality of the news to gain in the ratings. “If people aren’t watching then it doesn't matter and so how do you get people to watch?” she says of her character’s plight. “It's things that enrage people, that upset people that make people want to keep watching. ... That's what Howard Beale does in this piece in Network, what Bryan Cranston does.

“I also have to empathize with myself, the character who is the one who does it,” she continued. “I have to understand the side that I normally” wouldn't agree with.
