Actor Victor Garber will join the new Netflix limited series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City in a recurring role, according to Deadline.

The ten-episode series is based on the books by Maupin and is on track for a 2019 premiere on the streaming platform. The original Tales of the City chronicled the lives of the residents of 28 Barbary Lane

The TV show picks up with the “next chapter” as Mary Ann returns home to San Francisco to reunite with her daughter Shawna and ex-husband Brian after two decades, when she chose to pursue her career. Upon her return, Mary Ann also finds herself reuniting with Anna Madrigal at Barbary Lane.

Garber joins fellow stage star Laura Linney, who plays Mary Ann, as well as Ellen Page as Shawna and Paul Gross as Brian. Garber will play Sam Garland, an Englishman who takes time reading to Anna.

A musical adaptation of Tales of the City received a New York City concert premiere in March 2017, featuring a score by Scissor Sisters frontman (and recent Kinky Boots star) Jake Shears and John Garden.

Garber is a four-time Tony nominee, having earned nods for Deathtrap in 1978, Little Me in 1982, Lend Me a Tenor in 1989, and Damn Yankees in 1994. He recently replaced David Hyde Pierce as Horace Vandergelder in the Tony-winning revival of Hello, Dolly! opposite Bernadette Peters, and alternate Donna Murphy, as Dolly Levi. He has also been nominated for six Primetime Emmys for his work on Frasier, Life with Judy Garland, Alias (thrice over), and Will & Grace.
