Cal Rep artistic director Joanne Gordon conceived the work, billed as a "scintillating piece [that] combines the poetry of Bukowski and the music and lyrics of Sondheim to reveal the sublime BS of life."
Both Sondheim (Sunday in the Park With George, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods) and the Bukowski Estate gave their permission for the piece, which will run Nov. 2-Dec. 8 under Gordon's direction.
Also planned for the upcoming season is a topical interpretation of Moliere's Tartuffe, which will be set in contemporary America, focusing on the role of political pundants in media and their power over the masses. Jim Anzide will direct the Feb. 15-March 9, 2013, run.
The final production will be Adam Bock's office-set black comedy The Thugs, to be directed by Anne D'Zmura, April 19-May 4, 2013.
