News Call Her Savage: Burnett Vehicle, Fade Out — Fade In, Finally on CD May 20 Fade Out — Fade In, the short-lived, cult-status Broadway musical comedy that starred Carol Burnett, is heard anew May 20, when Decca Broadway re-releases its original cast album.

Show tune fans have been hungry for the score on CD for decades, and an entire generation doesn't know the quirky, satiric songs that spoof Hollywood and its dreamers. Burnett starred in the 1964 show as a former usherette who finds stardom in the movies.

The recording has been out of print for 30 years. Decca bills the cast album as "the most requested unavailable original cast recording" in its large catalog.

The album preserves the work of composer Jule Styne and lyricists Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Jack Cassidy starred with Burnett. The show's songs include "You Mustn't Feel Discouraged" (a spoof of Shirley Temple numbers), "Close Harmony," "Lila Tremaine," "The Usher From the Mezzanine," "Fear," "Oh Those Thirties," "My Fortune Is My Face," "Call Me Savage," "Go Home Train," "It's Good to be Back Home" and more.

The show lasted only 199 performances. Burnett missed performances due to illness, irking the producers. The box office did not recover, though Burnett did: She found fame in TV and wouldn't return to Broadway for decades (Moon Over Buffalo and Putting It Together).

The cast also included Lou Jacobi, Tiger Haynes and Tina Louise. The CD package includes new liner notes, synopsis and photographs from the original production.
