June Gable, who has been seen on Broadway in Candide, Nash at Nine,The Ritz, and Moose Murders, is currently co-starring in Nicky Silver’s This Day Forward at Off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre. Here, the veteran actor shares the theatrical performances that most affected her as part of the audience.
“As my career in the theatre has spanned decades since the 60's and 70's, I have seen many, innumerable, memorable performance,” Gable told Playbill.com. “But these are the ones that immediately come to mind as the most inspirational!!”
William Devane in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Colleen Dewhurst, Jason Robards, and Ed Flanders in A Moon for the Misbegotten
Three people, phenomenal actors, I came to know personally. When I was very young, I studied acting at Circle In The Square Theater School with Michael Kahn. I remember sneaking and hiding behind the seats to watch Colleen and George C. Scott, directed by José Quintero, in Desire Under the Elms!
I saw everything she was in that I could! Particularly memorable, Agnes of God.
Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope in An American in Paris
I don't want to forget musical theatre, of which was so much a part of my early career. Recently, the beautiful couple in An American in Paris, Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope. They thrilled me as dancers and actors.
On the Twentieth Century
Then, of course, Kristin Chenoweth along with her wonderful male co-stars, were sensational in On the Twentieth Century. Fabulous!
Larry David in Fish in the Dark
I saved the juiciest experience for last. Larry David in Fish in the Dark. When the show started, in my snooty way of passing judgment, I asked, “Is this guy a trained stage actor?” Midway through, I was laughing so hard that all my makeup ran off. I looked around and everyone else in the theatre was in the same laughing coma. What a guy. I fell in love.
