News CanStage's Urinetown and Canadian Hairspray Among Dora Nominees in Toronto; Former "Idol" Singer Nominated Nominations for the 2005 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, celebrating excellence in theatre, dance and opera in Toronto, were announced June 13, with the resident production of Urinetown and the Canadian production of Hairspray among high-profile nominees.

The awards are split into five divisions that address differing production sizes and budgets, as well as different disciplines: General Theatre, Independent Theatre, Theatre for Young Audiences, Dance and Opera.

In the General Theatre division, CanStage leads the nominees with 22 nominations for six productions and Necessary Angel Theatre Company comes in second, honored with 13 nominations for two productions. Tarragon Theatre is third with nine.

In the Independent Theatre division, Theatre Extasis and The Theatre Centre lead with eight nominations for That Time.

Opera Atelier is the front-runner in the Opera division with seven nominations. Dancer and choreographer Susie Burpee leads with three nods in the Dance division and Roseneath Theatre does the same in the Theatre for Young Audiences division.

Production-wise, CanStage's Urinetown obtained 10 nominations, the most nominations for any individual show: Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Musical for John Rando, Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role - Musical for David Keeley, Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role - Musical for Frank Moore, Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role - Musical for Mary Ann McDonald, Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role - Musical for Jennifer Waiser, Outstanding Lighting Design for Brian MacDevitt, Outstanding Sound Design/Composition for Keith Handegord, Outstanding Musical Direction for Stephen Woodjetts and Outstanding Choreography in a Play or Musical for John Carrafa. The Canadian production of Hairspray earned eight Dora nominations, for Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Musical for Jack O'Brien, Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role-Musical for Jay Brazeau, Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role-Musical for Vanessa Olivarez (a onetime "American Idol" contestant) and Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role for Fran Jaye as well as Outstanding Musical Direction, Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Choreography in a Play or Musical.

Many view the new-works categories as the most important part of any theatre awards because they indicate the industry and vitality of the resident theatre community.

The Independent division nominees for Outstanding New Play or Musical are Erika Batdorf for Poetic License, T. Beagan for Thy Neighbour's Wife, Andy Massingham for Rough House, Gord Rand for Pond Life and Rick Roberts for Kite. In the General division the New Play nominees are Claudia Dey for Trout Stanley, Keira Loughran for Little Dragon, Rick Miller & Daniel Brooks for Bigger Than Jesus, John Mighton for Half Life and David S. Young with the company for No Great Mischief. New Musical nominees in the General division are David Finley for Aladdin and Guy Mignault for Autour de Kurt Weill.

The winners in the Independent Theatre division all receive a $1,000 cheque from Mrs. Bluma Appel.

The Dora eligibility year runs from June 1 to May 31. The 26th Dora Mavor Moore Awards will be held 8 PM June 27 at the Winter Garden Theatre Centre. For more information, visit www.tapa.ca.
