Presented as the venue’s main show during this year’s Edinburgh Festival, Midnight Cowboy officially opens Aug. 7 following previews that begin Aug. 4.
Olivier Award winner Con O’Neil takes on the role of street-wise, small-time con-artist Enrico, played by Dustin Hoffman in the 1969 John Schlesinger movie. Charles Aitkin plays Ratso’s unlikely friend and naïve country boy Joe Buck (played by Jon Voight in the film). The cast also includes Emma Kennedy, Sam Crane, Victoria Lennox and Nancy Walsh.
O’Neil was last seen in the Southwark Fair at the Royal National Theatre in a production helmed by NT Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner. Aitken moves to the production straight after his appearance in the Oxford Stage Company’s tour of Paradise Lost.
The adaptation by writer Tim Fountain (Sex Addict, Julie Birchill is Away, Resident Alien) is based on both James Leo Herlihy’s novel and the MGM movie. John Clancy, whose Edinburgh productions include Americana Absurdum, Horse Country and Fatboy, directs.
