Nick Blood will play the fifth Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe, the Beatles’ original bassist and best friend to Lennon, whose relationship with Lennon and German photographer Astrid Kirschher form the central plot to the Backbeat story. Ruta Gedmintas will play Kirschher, with Andrew Knott as John Lennon, Daniel Healy as Paul McCartney, William Payne as George Harrison and Oliver Bennett as Pete Best, the original Beatles drummer. They will be joined by Adam Sopp as Tony Sheridan and Ringo Starr, Dominic Rouse as Klaus Voorman, Ben Fox as Arthur Ballard and Bert Kaempfert, and James Wallace as Sir George Martin.
The show is directed by David Leaveux, from Iain Softley’s production for the Glasgow Citizens Theatre where it premiered last year. It is produced by Karl Sydow, with designs by Christopher Oram and Andrew D. Edwards, lighting by Howard Harrison and David Holmes, and sound by Paul Groothuis and Ed Clarke. Projections are designed by Timothy Bird and Nina Dunn for Knifedge, with movement by Nikki Woollaston, fights by Renny Krupinski, and music supervised by Paul Stacey.
