A reading of Richard Alleman's The Bunner Sisters will be presented April 3 at 6:30 PM at the House of the Redeemer in Manhattan.

Directed by Anthony Newfield, the cast will feature Anne Buelteman (Les Misérables), Katie Firth (A Day by the Sea), Erin Neufer (Fellow Travelers), Josiah Polhemus (Mad Men), Amy Prosser (The Heiress), and Jo Yang (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

Based on the little-known Edith Wharton novella, The Bunner Sisters tracks the lives of two unmarried sisters eking out a living as seamstresses in a tenement basement in Lower Manhattan in the 1880s. When an unattached man enters the picture, the sisters’ existence is upended.

Following a 2015 staged reading, the work received its first full production in 2016 in San Francisco. An Off-Broadway production had been planned for spring 2020 but was canceled due to the pandemic. The work was recently translated into Italian by University of Pisa professor Simone Pratelli and was presented in September 2023 by San Francisco’s Museo Italo Americano.
