Off-Broadway News Casting Revealed for Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival

The festival will run October 10-16 at Theatre Row.

Casting has been revealed for the upcoming Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival, which will welcome seven works by TNB2S+ artists—a group that includes Trans, Non-Binary, and Two-Spirit–identifying people, along with any artist who does not identify with the male and female binary. The Festival, led by Founding Artistic Director George Strus, will perform at Off-Broadway's Theatre Row October 10–16, with one work per evening, all at 7 PM.

Ty Defoe's Trans World, directed by Dominique Rider and featuring dramaturgy by Josephine Kearns, will perform October 10, centering on a group of Trans individuals who join the cast of a reality TV show. Starring are b norwood (american (tele)visions), Carolina Đỗ (Linda Vista), Futaba Shioda (39 Steps), Logan Rozos (David Makes Man), Mariyea (On Sugarland), Maybe Burke (Love Letters to Nobody), MJ Rawls (The Healing), and Samy Nour Younes Figaredo (The Watering Hole). Sami Binder will serve as stage manager, with stage directions read by Zainab Barry.

Liliana Padilla's Twitch follows October 11, directed by Jack Ferver and featuring dramaturgy by Desiree S. Mitton. Featured in the cast are Jojo Brown (Billions), Pauli Pontrelli (The Visitor), Rev. Yolanda (High Maintenance), Spencer Weidie (The Lost Supper), Marilee Talkington (The Lily’s Revenge), and TL Thompson (Straight White Men). Annika Prager is the stage manager and assistant director, and stage directions will be read by Meghan Piper Johnson (mpj).

Roger Q. Mason's Hide and Hide, about a Filipina immigrant whose life collides with a white, gay sex worker escaped from Christian conversion camp, will perform October 12, directed by é boylan and featuring dramaturgy by Gaven Trinidad. The cast will include Han Van Sciver (Love’s Labours Lost), with additional casting to be announced. Mars Neri will serve as stage manager, and stage directions will be read by Eliana Coe.

Following October 13 is ruth tang's Work Hard Have Fun Make History, directed by Kedian Keohan with dramaturgy by Lewis Fender. The play catalogs all possible kinds of phone calls, including customer service, phone sex hotlines, and more. The cast will include Morgan Sullivan (Dickinson), Sagan Chen (Two Mile Hollow), and Z Infante (Kiss My Aztec!). SElyse Durand is the stage manager, and stage directions will be read by Marisa Budnick.

Aziza BarnesNana, directed by Rad Pereira and featuring dramaturgy by Al Parker, will be presented October 14, telling a multi-generational story inspired by Barnes' paternal lineage and their self-mythologies. Featured in the cast will be B Alexander (Dreamer in the Falls), Ianne Fields Stewart (Dash & Lily), Lily Dominique (Venus and What Else is Nocturnal), Becca Blackwell (Is This A Room), and Javon Q. Minter (What to Send Up When it Goes Down), with additional casting to be announced. Mia Sterbini will serve as assistant director with Joseph Distl as stage manager.

Next up is Mara Vélez Meléndez's Thelma and Louise and The Time Machine, performing October 15. Directed by Sivan Battat and featuring dramaturgy by Aydan Shahdadpuri, the work, which injects a time machine into the beloved screen characters for a story of women loving women across multiple universes, will star Alex Might (Are You There?), Nora Schell (Jagged Little Pill), and Tẹmídayọ Amay (The Color Purple), with additional casting to be announced. Nat Kelley DiMario will serve as stage manager, and Pauli Pontrelli is assistant director.

The series will close October 16 with OVERHEARD: Fifteen Commission Monologues Written BY TNB2S+ Artists FOR TNB2S+ Artists, directed by A Strange Loop Tony nominee L. Morgan Lee. The evening will include works by A.A. Brenner, Azure D. Osborne-Lee, Bianca Leigh, Else Went, Isaac Gómez, Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin, Lady Dane Figueroa Edidi, Liqing Xu, MashuqMushtaq Deen, Sam Hamashima, Sharifa Yasmin, Sylvan Oswald, TimothyDuWhite, travis l. tate, and Victor I. Cazares, with dramaturgy by series artistic director George Strus. The cast will include Evie Schuckman (Octavia E Butler’s Parable of the Sower) and yannick-robin eike (Ride the Cyclone), with additional casting to be annoucned. Mika Kauffman will serve as assistant director.

Additional festival staff includes cultural consultant Sam Morreale, line producer rohr driscoll, and marketing advisor Molly Barson. The festival has been cast by The Telsey Office's Charlie Hano.

The festival is counseled by its voluntary advisory board Core Community, which includes Tony nominee Adam Rigg (The Skin of Our Teeth), Jonathan Larson Award-winning writer César Alvarez, New York Stage and Film artistic director Chris Burney, David Mendizábal, Guggenheim fellow Jen Silverman, Tony winner John Cameron Mitchell, Tony winner KO (formerly known as Karen Olivo), Jonathan Larson Award-winning poet Kit Yan, MJ Kaufman, Qween Jean, co-director of A.R.T. Risa Shoup, Grammy winner Ty Defoe, and Princeton Arts fellow Will Davis.
