Deadline.com reports that the award-winning actress will play the role of the mayor's wife, a part that is being added for the film version of the hit Broadway musical. The wife, a conservative, hopes to do away with rock 'n roll.

Adam Shankman, who will direct and choreograph the film, told Deadline, "There are so many plotlines in the piece, we thought it would be fun to create a villain, and a cultural discussion point. She's the moral majority person, kind of like if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child in that era. To have a great actress who won an actress in this genre with 'Chicago' is wonderful."

Zeta-Jones will sing Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Filming, according to a previous Variety report, will begin May 19 in Florida.

The film will also feature Russell Brand as Lonny, Diego González Boneta as Drew, Alec Baldwin as Dennis, Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian, Mary J. Blige as Justice and Paul Giamatti as the manager of the rock band. The motion picture, based on the Broadway musical of the same name, will arrive in movie theatres around the country June 1, 2012. The musical's book writer, Chris D'Arienzo, has penned the screenplay for the film with revisions by Shankman and Justin Theroux; it will be produced by Rock of Ages Broadway producers Carl Levin, Matthew Weaver and Scott Prisand, with Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot. Executive producers are Garrett Grant, Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver.

Rock of Ages, which uses hits from the 1980s as its score, premiered Off-Broadway at New World Stages in October 2008. The musical transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway in March 2009, earning five Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Actor for Constantine Maroulis. The production reopened March 24 at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
