A new production of Galas, a satirical ode to soprano superstar Maria Callas, will begin June 13 at Off-Broadway's Theatre at St. John's. Opening night is set for June 16.
Everett Quinton stars in and directs the comedy penned by Ridiculous Theatrical Company founder Charles Ludlam. Joining him in the cast are Shane Baker, Christopher Johnson, Maude Lardner Burke, Beth Dodye Bass, Géraldine Dulex, Jenne Vath, and current Artistic Director of Theatre at St. John’s Mark Erson in his theatre debut.
The show, about a larger-than-life diva whose name happens to rhyme with Callas, premiered in 1983 by way of Ridiculous Theatrical Company, known for its bold, off-beat, and gender-bending works. Quinton met the late Ludlam in 1975, going on to make his theatrical debut with RTC the following year. The two would go on to become partners in art and life.
The new engagement coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and WorldPride 2019, hosted in New York City.
Scenic design is by Jim Boutin, lighting design is by Robert Neapolitan, costume design is by Ramona Ponce, and Karen Oughtred serves as Stage Manager.
