The fully-staged production on the Powerhouse mainstage in Poughkeepsie, NY, is billed as "a funny, provocative, and wildly theatrical tale of a guy who keeps showing up. One never knows where the Pirate may appear. But when evil makes its entrance, Pirate can usually be found."
Writer and director Shanley (a Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient for Doubt and an Academy Award winner for "Moonstruck") has returned to Powerhouse Theater ever since the initial Powerhouse season in 1985 when Mark Linn-Baker directed his Savage in Limbo. Shanley noted that the Powerhouse "audience is genius … They know everything and you just have to listen to them."
Among Shanley's works that have had their premiere at Powerhouse (in readings and/or workshops or productions) are Pirate, Veronica, Romantic Poetry (with Henry Krieger), Defiance, Doubt, Cellini, Don't Forget Your Gun, The Fool and Her Fortune, The January Man, I Am Angry, the dreamer examines his pillow, Welcome to the Moon and Savage in Limbo.
Camp appeared in Broadway's Coram Boy and Heartbreak House, Hernandez was featured in Off-Broadway's Yank! and Romantic Poetry, Parry appeared in Off-Broadway's Equivocation and Broadway's Coram Boy and The Real Thing, and Puzzo was featured in Off-Broadway's Killing Women, Khartoum, Dirty Story, In Arabia We'd All be Kings.
Tickets are $35. Performances at the Powerhouse Theater mainstage are July 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 at 8 PM; July 24, 25, 31; Aug. 1 at 2 PM. There will be a post-show discussion on July 27.
