The world premiere of Charly Evon Simpson’s sandblasted officially opens Off-Broadway February 27 at the Vineyard Theatre. The new play, a co-production with WP Theater, recently announced an extension through March 13. Previews began February 6.
Summer L. Williams makes her New York City directing debut, helming a cast that includes Rolonda Watts (best known for her mid-'90s television talk show Rolonda), Marinda Anderson, Brittany Bellizeare, and Andy Lucien.
The highly theatrical play finds its heroines, Angela and Odessa, turning to a celebrity-turned-wellness maven in their search for healing, but finding the journey just might be the cure.
The creative team includes scenic designer Matt Saunders, costume designer Montana Levi Blanco, lighting designer Stacey Derosier, sound designer Sadah Espii Proctor, hair and wig designer Cookie Jordan, and casting director Kelly Gillespie.
Simpson is the recipient of The Vineyard’s 2019 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award and a 2018-20 WP Theater Lab Alum.
The four-time Tony-winning actor and writer is featured along with Michael R. Jackson, Jacquel Spivey, and more in Pride of Stage and Screen, airing on MSNBC June 26.
