News Cherry Lane Mentor Project Kicks Off With McKenna's Secret Agenda of Trees March 20 The Cherry Lane Theatre's annual set of showcase productions of its Mentor Project plays kicks off March 20 with the start of The Secret Agenda of Trees by Colin McKenna, who is mentored by Lynn Nottage. Sam Gold directs the production.

The other plays will be Topsy Turvy Mouse by Peter Gil-Sheridan, mentored by Michael Weller, and Training Wisteria by Molly Smith Metzler, mentored by Jules Feiffer.

The Secret Agenda of Trees By Colin McKenna

According to press notes, "In the backwoods, 13 year old Veronica smolders with unrequited love for a boy she met in study hall. When her mother brings home a mysterious stranger and her methamphetamine use begins to spiral out of control, Veronica turns to her powerful dream life to help her do battle with the dangers that have invaded her home."

"On the eve of his high school graduation, video game junkie Dylan sneaks beers in the shed while his recently divorced mother Lynn desperately tries to return her neglected suburban yard to its former glory. But when her ex-husband barges in for Dylan's festivities, Lynn realizes that home improvement is the least of her family's worries." Founded in 1998 by Michael Weller, Susann Brinkley and Angelina Fiordellisi and currently facilitated by Pamela Perrell, the Cherry Lane's Mentor Project teams up-and-coming playwrights with experienced mentors as the playwrights hone their plays in preparation for a showcase production at the Cherry Lane.

Past mentors have included David Auburn, Charles Fuller, Tony Kushner, Marsha Norman, Alfred Uhry, A.R. Gurney, David Henry Hwang, Craig Lucas, Theresa Rebeck and Ed Bullins.
