Porchlight Music Theatre's 2008-09 season will include Candide, Pacific Overtures and Once on This Island, artistic director L. Walter Stearns announced.

The satiric, Voltaire-inspired Candide, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by various collaborators, including John Latouche, Stephen Sondheim and Richard Wilbur, will play Sept. 13-Nov. 2. This is the Candide that has a revised book by Hugh Wheeler.

Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Pacific Overtures, the epic tale of the Westernization of Japan, will run March 14-May 3, 2009.

The season finale, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's "Little Mermaid"-inspired Once on This Island, based on the Rosa Guy novel "My Love, My Love," will play May 9-June 28, 2009.

Porchlight Music Theatre is known for "presenting grand stories in intimate settings, showcasing the brightest, up-and-coming talent and developing new music theatre work," according to the troupe.

Porchlight has staged 35 shows including four world premieres, among them, The Teapot Scandals, its first work developed through Off the Porch, Porchlight's new works program, as well as seven Chicago premieres. Porchlight earned the most Jeff Awards of any Chicago music theatre and the most After Dark Awards of any Chicago theatre in 2007. An Equity theatre since 2004, the company has already received a total of 24 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations resulting in 10 Jeff Awards.
