Classic Arts News Choreographers Salute Meredith Monk With New Dances in New York
Dance to Monk, a program of world-premiere dances set to the music of Meredith Monk, opens tonight at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in Manhattan.
The program, in honor of the composer's 40-plus years of multidisciplinary work and presented by Danspace Project, runs through November 21.

The featured choreographers, invited by Monk to participate, are Ann Carlson, of the Axis Dance Company in San Francisco; S_an Curran; Molissa Fenley, with her company, Molissa Fenley and Dancers; Dana Reitz; and Doug Varone, plus Bill T. Jones, who appears at the performance on video. The music, selected from Monk's vast discography, includes Dolmen, Do You Be, mercy, and Volcano Songs.

On November 23, a 40th-anniversary benefit and party at Danspace features more premiere performances by Eiko & Koma, Lar Lubovich Dance Company, Phoebe Neville, and Elizabeth Streb, plus the Merce Cunningham Dance Company accompanied by a live Monk performance.
