Classic Arts News Choreographers Susan Marshall, Bebe Miller, Wally Cardona Among Winners of 2005-06 Bessie Awards The New York Dance and Performance Awards — known lovingly as the "Bessies," after the late dance teacher Bessie Schonberg, a mentor to many important figures in modern dance — were presented at the Joyce Theater in New York City on Sunday, September 17.
Established in 1983, the Bessies honor outstanding achievement in dance (and related performance) by independent artists. Award recipients in the Choreographer/Creator category received $1,000 each; the Performer, Design, and Composer awardees each received $500.

Winners for choreography included, among others, were Susan Marshall for Cloudless at Dance Theater Workshop, Bebe Miller and her creative team for Landing/Place at DTW, Wally Cardona for Everywhere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (founder of the troupe Urban Bush Women) for Walking with Pearl ... Southern Diaries at Dance New Amsterdam.

Among the recipients of Bessies for performance were Roxane D'Orl_ans Juste for her body of work with the Jos_ Lim‹n Company, BenoêÎt Lachambre for FORGERIES, LOVE AND OTHER MATTERS at DTW, Ryutaro Mishima for What We When We at Danspace Project, Michael Trusnovec for his body of work with Paul Taylor Dance Company, and downtown dance and performance legend Valda Setterfield for Sustained Achievement.

Bessie Awards were also presented for Installations and New Media, Composers and Visual Design, as well as special citations for work with presenting institutions and support of artists.
