Christopher D'Amboise has been tapped to choreograph a Goodspeed Opera House workshop of the new Terrence Mann-Jerry Korman rock musical, Romeo & Juliet. The workshop will take place from Jan. 4 to Feb. 14, 1999 said Goodspeed spokesperson Jennifer Wislocki, and may include a couple of public performances.
Terrence Mann, the two-time Tony nominated Broadway musical actor, composed this pop rock version of William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy. Mann will also direct, while Korman will be musical director. No casting has been announced.
Wislocki said Mann had initially thought of titling the musical "R & J" but then had to think of something else when the same-named Off-Broadway drama became a hit. (Joe Calarco's play closes in NY Nov. 29.)
D'Amboise is the son of famous ballet dancer Jacques D'Amboise and sister of performer Charlotte D'Amboise. He was briefly hired as the choreographer of the troubled George C. Wolfe production of On the Town before leaving due to artistic differences. Charlotte D'Amboise is married to Terrence Mann.
A Tony nominee for both Les Miserables and Beauty And The Beast, Mann most recently appeared on Broadway in the pre-vamped version of The Scarlet Pimpernel. -- By Robert Simonson and David Lefkowitz and Sean McGrath
