Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote their version. Stephen Sondheim created his, and Michael Jackson produced a disco version of the traditional fairy tale. And now, Young People’s Theatre at BoarsHead, Michigan’s Public Theatre in Lansing, premieres its original musical version of Cinderella, Cindy Reilly, opening Dec. 12 and running through Dec. 21.

A press release for the show warns theatregoers, “This play is not for children only.”

In this modern, musical retelling, Cindy Reilly is a bespectacled CPA, surrounded by her chic step-sisters, a rockstar “formerly known as Prince Charming,” and her evil stepmother, a Leona Helmsly-type hotel mogul.

The script and lyrics were written by BoarsHead regulars Gus Kaikkonen and Kraig Swartz, who starred in BoarsHead’s recent production of A Tuna Christmas. The music was written by Ellen Mandel, resident composer for the Jean Cocteau Repertory in New York City.
