Best known for his role his role as Det. Lester Freamon in TV's "The Wire," he is currently appearing on the London stage in the U.K. premiere of David Mamet's Race at Hampstead Theatre through June 29. Born in New York City and raised in Englewood, NJ, one of his first stage credits was for the West End production Bubbling Brown Sugar in 1977; other West End credits include Blues In The Night, The Witches of Eastwick and Chess. He also wrote and co-starred in Five Guys Named Mo that transferred from Stratford East's Theatre Royal to the West End and was subsequently also seen on Broadway. Other Broadway credits include The Iceman Cometh that transferred from the Old Vic and Chicago. He has also played Porgy in a West End production of Porgy and Bess in 2006, for which he was Olivier-nominated, and in 2011 played the title role in Othello at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre opposite Dominic West, who also stars in "The Wire," as Iago.

His other TV credits include "Damages," "Person of Interest," "Holby City" and "Doctor Who."
