News Classic Stage Conjures Greek Tales in Premiere of Carson's An Oresteia, Opening April 1 In theatrical terms, it doesn't get more "classic" than going back to ancient Greek drama. Classic Stage Company's world-premiere production of poet Anne Carson's new translation, An Oresteia — based on ancient Greek plays by a trio of masters — opens Off-Broadway April 1 after previews from March 22.

Carson's new translations of Aeschylus' Agamemnon, Sophocles' Electra and Euripides' Orestes have been compiled into a two-part theatrical event, which will be performed on two separate evenings or in a one-day marathon. The text was recently published in hardcover by Faber and Faber.

Part I, which features Agamemnon and Electra, will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 PM; Part II, Orestes, will be presented Wednesdays and Fridays at 8 PM. The marathon performances are scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays at 3 PM.

Performances will continue through April 19.

The cast includes Craig Baldwin, Michi Barall, Jesse Barbagallo, Annika Boras, Yusef Bulos, Eric Dyer, Dan Hurlin, Karinne Keithley, Doan Ly, Christopher McCann, Steve Mellor, David Neumann and Stephanie Roth Haberle.

An Oresteia features direction by Brian Kulick and Gisela Cardenas (Part I) and direction by Paul Lazar and choreography by Annie-B Parson (Part II).

"In this unique compilation translated by Ms. Carson and told by each of ancient Greece's greatest tragedians," production notes state, "CSC brings together these three classics in a kaleidoscopic epic trilogy of power, revenge and redemption that represents one of its most ambitious theatrical undertakings yet."

Carson was born in Canada and teaches Ancient Greek for a living. She is currently a professor of classics, comparative literature and English at the University of Michigan.
