News Color Purple Documentary Will Premiere Feb. 18 The one-hour documentary "The Color Purple: The Color of Success," about the making of the Broadway musical The Color Purple, will premiere on the cable channel TV One Feb. 18 from 8 PM to 9 PM.

"The Color Purple: The Color of Success" looks behind the scenes at the development of the musical and follows the story's path from book to film to Broadway. The documentary includes interviews with Alice Walker, the original novelist, Quincy Jones, a producer of the film and the musical, and others involved with the work.

The documentary debuted on TV One's video on demand service on Feb. 5. After its premiere Feb. 18, it will replay later that night at midnight, plus on Feb. 20 at noon, Feb. 22 at 11 AM and March 3 at noon. TV One is a cable channel aimed at African-American adults.

The Broadway production of The Color Purple began previews on Nov. 1, 2005, at the Broadway Theatre and officially opened Dec. 1, 2005. The national tour will kick off at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre on April 17.

The musical is directed by Gary Griffin, who will also direct the tour, and features a score by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and a book by the Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman ('night, Mother). The musical's main producer is Oprah Winfrey, who received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Sofia in Steven Spielberg's film version.

The show was nominated for 11 Tony Awards. LaChanze, who plays the lead role of Celie, earned the show's only Tony win, for Best Actress in a Musical.

 

The design team for both the Broadway show and the tour is John Lee Beatty (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), Brian MacDevitt (lighting) and Jon Weston (sound).

In addition to Winfrey, The Color Purple's Broadway producing team includes Scott Sanders, Roy Furman, Quincy Jones, Creative Battery, Anna Fantaci & Cheryl Lachowicz, Independent Presenters Network, Lowy Family Group, Stephanie McClelland, Gary Winnick, Jan Kallish, Andrew Asnes & Adam Zotovich and Todd Johnson.
