News Come From Away, Musical About Travelers Stranded on 9/11, Sets DC Tryout Cast Jenn Colella and Chad Kimball will recreate their Seattle performances.

Come From Away, the new rock musical that explores the lasting connection forged between a group of travelers whose planes were diverted to a small Newfoundland town on September 11, 2001, has announced the cast for its pre-Broadway engagement this fall in Washington, DC.

Come From Away had its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in summer 2015, prior to a run at the Seattle Repertory Theatre last fall, where it broke box-office records. The new musical will play Washington, DC's Ford's Theatre September 2-October 9, followed by a November 15-Jananuary 1, 2017, run at Toronto's Mirvish Theatre.

Many of the DC cast members were also featured in the previous productions, including Tony Award nominee Chad Kimball (Memphis), Jenn Colella (High Fidelity, Chaplin), Joel Hatch (Billy Elliot, Annie), Rodney Hicks (The Scottsboro Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar) and Caesar Samayoa (Sister Act, Carmen). They will be joined in Washington by Kendra Kassebaum (Wicked), Geno Carr, Alyssa Wilmoth Keegan, Lee MacDougall, Q. Smith, Sharon Wheatley and Astrid Van Wieren.

The show has been announced to arrive on Broadway in spring 2017, following engagements in Washington, DC and Toronto, though no Broadway theatre or dates have been announced.

Come From Away features book, music and lyrics by the Canadian husband-and-wife team Irene Sankoff and David Hein (My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding). Tony Award nominee Christopher Ashley (Memphis) directs.

Here's how it's billed: “In a heartbeat, 38 planes and 6,579 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, doubling the population of one small town on the edge of the world. When the world stopped, their stories moved us all. Set against the backdrop of that infamous day in September 2001, Come From Away is a new original musical with a propulsive score.”

Junkyard Dog Productions, which also ushered Memphis and First Date to Broadway after West Coast engagements, has said it will bring the project to Broadway.

No casting has been announced for the show's future productions at this time.

The creative team includes Ian Eisendrath, music director; Kelly Devine, choreographer; Beowulf Boritt, scenic design; Toni-Leslie James, costume design; Howell Binkley, lighting design; and Gareth Owen, sound design.
