Come-On a Her House: Milwaukee Rep Has Rosemary Clooney Show, Blue Rose

News   Come-On a Her House: Milwaukee Rep Has Rosemary Clooney Show, Blue Rose
Songs made famous by Rosemary Clooney are slipped into a biographical cabaret context for the new one-woman show, Blue Rose: The Rosemary Clooney Story, Sept. 9-Nov. 6 at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre's Stackner Cabaret.

Expect "Mambo Italiano," "On a Slow Boat to China" and "Love You Didn't Do Right by Me," among others, in the evening conceived by playwright David Scully and director David Hunter Koch.

"Clooney's biography serves as a framework for the show, delivered to the audience in a narrative poem format that links all the songs together," according to the announcement. "The chronology of Clooney's music is basically unaltered in the show as it reflects what was going on in her life at the time."

What was "going on" included struggles "to balance an increasingly successful career with a problematic marriage and the demands of motherhood," according to production notes. "After succumbing to a dependency on drugs and a mental breakdown, Rosemary triumphantly overcame her challenges and secured her place in American music history."

Actress and singer Katherine Strohmaier will play the title role of Rosemary Clooney. This marks her Milwaukee Rep debut. Her credits include Singin' in the Rain (5th Avenue Theatre) and the premiere of Martin Charnin's Robin Hood: The Legend Continues (Village Theatre). She also works as a music director and pianist.

Paul Helm is the music director and musician for the show. The creative team includes Sarah Hunt-Frank (set design), Scott Rott (costume design), Chester Loeffler-Bell (lighting design) and Mark S. Sahba and Jessica Connelly (stage managers).
