Chicago's Mr. Cellophane, Joel Grey, won't be visible at all this week at the Shubert Theatre. He's currently on vacation from the runaway hit Kander and Ebb revival, and will return July 29. Understudy John Mineo subs for Grey until then. Even a dedicated feline like Marlene Danielle needs an occasional vacation. Danielle, a member of the Broadway Cats company from its first performance, is currently taking time off; Rachelle Rak is filling in as Bombalurina in the meantime.
As Candide counts down its final performances, it does so without Arte Johnson, who has left the production. Avery Saltzman has replaced Johnson in the Bernstein/Wheeler/Wilbur musical, which closes up shop at the Gershwin Theatre July 27.
Finally, as previously reported on Playbill On-Line, Deedee Lynn Magno has succeeded Joan Almedilla in the title role of Miss Saigon at the Broadway Theatre. At the same time, Juan P. Pineda has moved up from the ensemble to the role of Thuy, replacing the departed Welly Yang in the Boublil/Schonberg/Maltby musical.
