Full casting has been announced for the Kenneth Branagh/Rob Ashford co-directed production of Romeo and Juliet that will begin performances at the Garrick Theatre May 12 prior to an official opening May 25 for a run through Aug. 13. It will also be broadcast live to cinemas July 7.
Joining the previously announced Lily James (Juliet), Richard Madden (Romeo) and Derek Jacobi (Mercutio) are Meera Syal as The Nurse, Marisa Berenson (Lady Capulet), Jack Colgrave Hirst (Benvolio), Tom Hanson (Paris), Matthew Hawksley (Anthony), Taylor James (Prince), Ansu Kabia (Tybalt), Racheal Ofori (Potpan), Nikki Patel (Balthasar), Chris Porter (Lord Montague), Zoë Rainey (Lady Montague), Michael Rouse (Lord Capulet), Sam Valentine (Friar Laurence) and Kathryn Wilder (Peta/Apothecary).
Seal's stage credits include Behind The Beautiful Forevers (National Theatre), If You Don't Let Us Dream, We Won't Let You Sleep (Royal Court Theatre), Much Ado About Nothing (Royal Shakespeare Company), The Killing Of Sister George (Arts Theatre), Shirley Valentine (Menier Chocolate Factory/Trafalgar Studios) and Rafta, Rafta (National Theatre).
In a press statement, Syal commented, "I'm so looking forward to joining such an exciting and prestigious company, and to be performing Shakespeare with them in this, his 400th anniversary year."
The cinema broadcast of Romeo and Juliet, which is being presented in partnership with Picturehouse Entertainment, will be directed by Benjamin Caron, who has also recently directed the broadcast of The Winter's Tale and collaborated with Kenneth Branagh on the forthcoming series of "Wallander," due to be broadcast on the BBC in 2016.
