Connecticut Repertory Theatre's 1999 Nutmeg Summer Season continues with Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Once This Island, June 25 July 10.
It has been nearly a decade since Once On This Island was playing on Broadway. The show opened at the Booth Theatre Oct. 18, 1990 and ran for more than a year, receiving eight Tony nominations, including musical, book and score.
Island is based on a tale by Hans Christian Anderson, as transformed into the Rosa Guy novel, "My Love, My Love." In Island, peasant girl Ti Moune rescues a rich but vain boy, with whom she falls in love. Little does she know what sacrifices she'll have to make in the days to come. The Caribbean inflected score features such songs as "Some Girls," "Ti Moune," "We Dance" and "Mama Will Provide."
Composers Lynn Ahrens (book & lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music) would go on to create Ragtime and are currently teamed with Eric Idle on The Seussical.
The cast of Once On This Island includes Amanda C. Avery, Kenajuan Bentley, Raquela Burt, Derrick Cobey, Rick Gomez, Somer Lee Graham, Ann Mahoney, Joe Monaghan, Ennis Smith, Cynthia Thomas, and Catherine Lovelace. Victoria Bussert will direct. For tickets or more information, call (860) 486-4226.
