News Constant Star Wins Seven Barrymore Awards in Philly; Cy Coleman, Permanent Collection Also Honored Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train, Constant Star and Permanent Collection are among the titles honored in the 2004 Barrymore Awards, announced Nov. 15 in Philadelphia.

The awards recognize excellence in the Philadelphia area's professional theatre community. That community reaches as far away as Wilmington, DE, where Lynn Redgrave appeared in a staging of Collected Stories. For her work there, she won the Barrymore for Leading Actress in a Play. Her co-star, Karina Mackenzie, also won for Supporting Actress in a Play. The production was the inaugural work of a young troupe called Contemporary Stage Company.

Constant Star, a production by Delaware Theatre Company, won the most Barrymores this year: Seven, in the categories of Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical, Harold Prince Award for Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Tazewell Thompson), Outstanding Musical Direction (Dianne Adams McDowell), Outstanding Set Design (Donald Eastman), Outstanding Costume Design (Merrily Murray-Walsh), Outstanding Sound Design (Fabian Obispo) and Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical.

Thomas Gibbons' new play, Permanent Collection, won for Outstanding New Play. It was produced by InterAct Theatre Company.

Cy Coleman, the Tony Award-winning composer, won for Outstanding Original Music for the Prince Music Theatre staging of The Great Ostrovsky.

Mary Martello was named Outstanding Actress in a Musical for Cafe Puttanesca at the Arden Theatre. The world premiere Philly native Michael Ogborn was also produced in Pittsburgh in a unique sort of co-staging, and had an independent production in Atlanta in recent months. Jorge Couisineau received the F. Otto Haas Award for Emerging Theatre Artist.
