News Could Taye Diggs Be Broadway's Next Hedwig? Buzz is swirling that Taye Diggs, who last appeared on Broadway in Wicked, may return to the stage as the next actor to take on the transgender East German rocker Hedwig, in the hit revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

According to AdWeek writer Jason Lynch, reporting from the Turner Entertainment upfronts, Diggs will be the next actor to step into the run. Hedwig currently features "Glee" star Darren Criss, who is contracted with the production through July 19.

 

 

Diggs also hinted at the news, posting an image of himself on Twitter that shows the Hedwig script at his side.

 

 

Plans for Diggs to join the cast could not be immediately confirmed. Diggs' numerous credits include Rent, Carousel, Chicago, "The Good Wife," "Chicago," "Private Practice," "Murder in the First," "Kevin Hill" and more.

The Broadway premiere of the cult rock musical began previews March 29, 2014, at the Belasco, prior to an official opening April 22 with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. Since then, the musical has boasted such stars as Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and the show's co-creator and original star, John Cameron Mitchell.

Rebecca Naomi Jones co-stars as Yitzhak. The role was originated in the revival by Lena Hall.

Hedwig features a book by Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask.

Both Harris and Hall won the Tony Awards for Best Lead Actor in a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a musical, respectively. Kevin Adams also won the Tony for Best Lighting Design. The production won Best Revival of a Musical.

Hedwig is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot) with musical staging by Emmy Award nominee Spencer Liff (The Wedding Singer, Cry-Baby). Justin Craig is musical director. 

The Hedwig creative team includes scenic designer Julian Crouch, costume designer Arianne Phillips, lighting designer Kevin Adams, hair and makeup designer Mike Potter, sound designer Timothy O'Heir, musical supervisor Ethan Popp, projection designer Benjamin Pearcy and vocal supervisor Liz Caplan. Casting is by James Calleri.
