News Creative Team Revealed for World Premiere of New Musical Bull Durham Additional creative team members have been announced for the Atlanta world premiere of Bull Durham, the new musical based on the 1988 baseball film, which will premiere at the Alliance Theatre in September 2014.

As first reported by Playbill.com, the musical is written by the film's original screenwriter Ron Shelton, who has adapted his screenplay for the musical, which has music and lyrics by Susan Werner. The romantic story is set within the world of minor league baseball.

The Southern-set musical had a developmental lab last summer in New York City. Laura Stanczyk and Jack Viertel, who is the artistic director of the City Center Encores! series, are shepherding the romantic musical comedy.

Casting is currently underway for the Atlanta premiere. Producers are hopeful for a future Broadway life for the musical.

Kip Fagan (The Revisionist), who directed the NYC lab, will helm the stage premiere of Bull Durham, which will begin performances Sept. 13 for a run through Oct. 5 at the Alliance, according to an Equity casting notice. The Alliance has not confirmed dates of production beyond a September 2014 start.

Creative team members, including choreographer Joshua Bergasse ("Smash") and musical director Jason DeBord, who also worked on the summer lab presentation, will return for the Atlanta premiere. Newly announced for the Atlanta run are Tony Award winner Derek McLane (scenic design) and Tony Award nominee Toni Leslie James (costume design).

Here's how the musical is billed: "Bull Durham, loosely based on Ron Shelton's experiences on and off the field with a Minor League Baseball team, tells the story of three lives brought together by America’s two favorite pastimes. Veteran catcher 'Crash' Davis has been brought to the Durham Bulls to prepare rookie Ebby Calvin 'Nuke' LaLoosh, a hot rod pitcher with a 'million dollar arm and a five cent head,' for the majors. Annie Savoy, self-appointed high priestess and muse of the Bulls, has a hard decision to make - every season she transforms one lucky player from an also-ran to an all-star by sharing with them her wisdom, experience and bed. The love triangle heats up quickly as each character struggles with their own desires and hopes for what the future holds. A pitch perfect blend of comedy, drama, and steamy romance, Bull Duhram will leave you cheering from the stands."
