New York's Applause Books will fete drama critic and author Jonathan Kalb on June 24 in celebration of the publication of his new book The Theatre of Heiner Muller. The event will take place 6:30-8:30 PM at Applause Books at 211 W. 71St St.

Kalb is best known as the regular theatre critic for the weekly New York Press, a position he has held for the last several months. He previous books included Free Admissions, a collection of his drama criticism, and a study of the work of Samuel Beckett. Kalb won the George Jean Nathan Award for drama criticism in 1991 and remained the youngest person to ever receive that honor. He is a professor of theatre at Hunter College.

The late Heiner Muller was one of the major figures of post-war German drama, though his highly experimental, non-narrative, deconstructionist work is rarely seen in this country. His most famous play is Hamletmachine, a dissection of the Shakespeare tragedy.

The Applause salute is open to the public. Admission is free.
